Horrifying Plastic Pollution in Bali

Diving at Manta Point in Nusa Penida, Bali should mean a glorious encounter with graceful manta rays. Instead, as this diver filmed, it meant swimming in a sea of plastic pollution.

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times: now is the time to get rid of as much plastic as possible from your life. Plastic pollution is absolutely choking the ocean, as evidenced by this sobering video shot by diver Rich Horner at Manta Point, Nusa Penida in Bali. In waters usually filled with graceful manta rays, we see instead a sea of trash, brought close to shore by the tides.

As divers, we must take the lead on this issue.Single-use plastics are one of the most egregious offenders, but luckily they’re also relatively easy to replace. There are many conservation organizations addressing plastic pollution, and this handy chart from Less Plastic can help you address it on a personal level. Because we know when you go to Bali to dive with mantas, diving in a sea of plastic is not what you had in mind.
