Scientists have released first-of-its-kind footage showing a nursing humpback whale calf – from the calf’s perspective. The footage was captured at a known humpback whale breeding area off the east coast of Madagascar by the nonprofit Cétamada, which has been tagging humpback whales for the past several years to learn more about communication methods and interactions.
Viewers can see the calf positioning itself beneath its mom and suckling, beginning at the 50-second mark. Cétamada claims this is the first humpback whale calf to be fitted with a camera for the study of “mother-young behavioral interactions.”
