As part of the Angel Shark Project, Felipe Ravina Olivares of Especies de Canarias got some especially excellent footage of juvenile angel sharks. Taken in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Felipe said he spent two years trying to get this footage, which speaks to how rare it is to witness this kind of behavior.
Angel sharks bury themselves in the sand, leaving only their eyes out. They lie in wait for the best opportunity to ambush their prey. As you’ll see in the video, their strike is swift – less than a second – and they use powerful suction to draw their meal into their mouth.
