It’s not every day that you get to see a giant squid captured on camera, let alone while diving. It’s even rarer to see one above the water. Often, and sadly, the only glimpse of these magnificent animals we only see is in Youtube clip of a dead specimen being hauled onto a boat.
So imagine the shock at seeing a 12-foot long squid swimming around a harbor from a pier, as many lucky people did at Toyama Bay in central Japan this past Christmas Eve. Even better, of course, is seeing one up close in the water as diver Akinobu Kimura found out.

The owner of Diving Shop Kaiyu managed to swim close to the squid and eventually guided it back out of the harbor into the open sea. Check out his amazing up-close video footage of this giant squid captured on camera.
