Exploring the MT Haven: a Freediving Film

This jaw-dropping film of world champion freedivers exploring the MT Haven will make you want to take freediving lessons immediately.

Like freediving pirates searching for lost bounty, world-champion freedivers Guillaume Néry, Morgan Bourc’his, and Rémy Dubern explore the wreck of the MT Haven in the Mediterranean Sea. Jérôme Espla shot this incredible film by Les Films Engloutis between 130 – 165 ft (40 – 50 m).

The MT Haven, formerly the Amoco Milford Haven was a crude-oil carrier. It infamously went down in 1991 while loaded with one million barrels of crude oil. The ship exploded, caught fire and subsequently sank off the coast of Genoa, Italy, killing six crew members. Up to 60,000 tons of oil spilled into the Mediterranean, fouling coastlines from Italy to southern France for the next 12 years.

The Haven is the largest shipwreck in the Mediterranean. It lies at a depth of 108 to 272 feet (33 to 83 m) off the coast of Genoa.
