The Marine Life Sanctuaries Society held a Beach Interpretation Program for a group of biologists at Porteau Cove Marine Park. A dead giant skate had washed up on shore by coincidence and MLSS used the opportunity to turn it into a teaching opportunity. A subsequent necropsy of the skate indicated that the cause of death may have been the tag in its’ wing. As the wings are crucial for their movement, tagging it there created issues with mobility. The area around the tag was quite infected. Dr. Chris Harvey-Clark a professor of Veterinary Medicine, a marine biologist and shark expert did a wonderful job of the post mortem armed with only a box cutter.
