Defence Whips

By Roy Mulder Writer

Roy Mulder certified with the Canadian Armed Forces in London Ontario in 1974. His interest in diving intensified after moving to Vancouver in 1989. As former vice-president of the Underwater Council of BC he became involved in beach clean-ups, dive safety and marine conservation issues. His interest in photography has taken him onto his current path as an underwater videographer and digital media producer. He uses his video camera to show the magnificence of the ocean and as a tool to show it to others. He is currently president of the Marine Life Sanctuaries Society of BC and is working on creating full no-take marine sanctuaries in Canada.

The ancient cloud sponges on this deep water reef in Howe Sound British Columbia is currently being promoted as an ideal spot to put a Marine Sanctuary. This cloud sponge bioherm is located in the southernmost fiord in Canada and it provides ideal habitat for juvenile fish. These cloud sponge bioherms are thousands of years old and are amazing dive sites. A bioherm is a term used where the new sponges grow on the old dead ones. The combination of depth and the fragility of the sponges dictate that any divers must have the ability to keep off of the bottom during their dives. The top of this particular reef starts at 33 meters and goes down hundreds of meters off the sides.
