Last year I wrote an article about Whale Sharks in Holbox, Mexico. While writing the article I realized that I just had
to experience the Whale Shark adventure as soon as possible. Maria from Dive Cooperative had reached out to me a few days after writing the article, within weeks we had our epic "Dream Extreme" dive adventure booked.
We started off in Cozumel then headed to Cenotes and then the Cancun Underwater Museum, we ended our breathe taking trip with the Whale Sharks. When we headed out on the Whale Shark excursion, Eduardo from Deep Life was saying that the past few days there were not as many Whale Sharks, maybe one or two, which of course would make it very difficult to find them. Keep in mind we were in August, near the end of the Whale Shark season, in July you can swim with around five hudred of them! Anyway, Eduardo had communicated that we may not get to see them and to not set expectations. I then looked him in they eye and said " oh no no no.. we are seeing hundreds of them and that's just how it is".
About an hour into our adventure I started to get a bit anxious and everyone on the boat were looking out for them. We didn't really know what to look for, but we were looking away. About an hour and a half into the trip we found them, we found hundreds of them, it was beyond amazing. My video partner Goh and I were hanging off the boat as we approached them, excited and respectful as can be. We silently slipped into the water and swam out away from the boat.
Our adrenaline was pumping as these massive Whale Sharks were swimming by us. We would be looking at one Whale Shark and then suddenly to the our right another would swim on by. Some were swimming very fast and some would just sit there, all of them of course were feeding. The funny thing is that they were feeding on fish eggs and not plakton. This is the second recorded time in history that humans have witnessed Whale Sharks feeding on fish eggs, their normal choice of course being plakton.
The video highlights our surreal experience with these amazing fish. We hope you enjoy!
